Maybe I'm Not Meant to Do Life Alone
(Not my new car. Mine is old, but newer than this one and red. Car show, Tucson 2009)
Apparently God has been trying to remind me in the past two years, that he is capable of working outside the bounds of my understanding. Before & after moving to St. Louis, I parted with my job, health, belongings, house, cello, then car.
At each turn, I was crushed & thinking, "God has to give me a well paying job with benefits so I can afford my medical bills, save up to get my stuff out of storage, then afford my own place, then a car, then someday a new cello."
Instead, the first thing he did was "give" me a cello via my pastor's son! Then he found me free clinic services via a friend, got my belongings sent to me via generous relatives, provided a safe place to live for 2 years in my uncle's house with a dear cousin, then opened up a lovely place of my own near downtown and my sister helped me with the deposit. On Monday, I received a call from a church couple saying they were giving me their red Nissan car for free! They were given the car by friends years ago and wanted to pass on the favor to someone else when the time came for them to get a minivan for their growing family. When she called, her first words to me were, "So, when can you come pick up your car?" It took a full 24 hours for the news to sink in enough for me to show my excitement, I was so shocked.
I'm still dirt poor & in a lame job with even fewer hours as of January, but at this point I'm like, "Hey, God, obviously you do things differently, so I'll just trust that if you're giving me the place to rent & the free car, you'll provide some odd way to pay for it all, if not via that long-awaited job."
I learned that it really is God who provides, most often through his people, and not only by my own work. That is a hard lesson for someone who's been working since age 10 and has a stubborn "I can take care of myself, THANK you!" streak.
"Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share." 1 Timothy 6:17-18
