Frolic Educationally

This is an after the fact Friday post, but there is still time for you, dear reader, to find a frolic-filled endeavor this weekend! My suggestion for this weekend is to support a local educational facility (primary or secondary school, community college, university, art school, or in my case today, a seminary) by attending one of their events.

Schools are constantly holding some fundraising event, sports tournaments, concerts, plays, dance performances, guest speaker or student presentations which are open to the public.

This evening, I attended Covenant Theological Seminary's FIRST annual Talent Show! Since I attend a Presbyterian Church (PCA) and work in a place where many seminary students end up working, I have a plethora of seminary student friends. Being in the environment that these friends are immersed daily was a pleasure because I am able to see them in their element, meet first hand the "famous" professors on campus, and learn the inside jokes that all educational communities invariably develop.

Besides all, that, the Talent Show was hilarious! The skits were funny, the music astounding and lovely and the poetry inspiring. One professor read a children's story, complete with a myriad of props and a projection of the book while others danced to rap music. The audience clapped and cheered for all the acts in extremely good humor and laughed at all the corny jokes. I loved seeing my friends shine either in planning the successful event, performing, or just being good sports as audience members.

Here in St. Louis, we have at least a dozen higher education entities from community colleges, art and design schools, tech schools, to world class universities, and so many solid school districts that a common question asked between locals upon meeting one another is, "What High School did you attend?"

Even if your area is not as illustriously talented and intelligent as ours (Am I proud of St. Louis? hmmm...), I am sure you can find a way to be an audience member to cheer on a local school in their endeavors this weekend. It is a good way to connect with your local community and the students will love you for it!
